Can My Truck Pull A Bass Boat?
Something that you need to keep in mind here is that if you have a bass boat, you need a truck to pull that boat, and yes, this includes a trailer as well. So, this means that you have to have a good SUV or pickup truck which has enough towing power to pull along the bass boat, the trailer, and more.
So, what are some of the pickup trucks an SUVs which can handle a big load?
|Truck||Max Weight Load|
|Ford Explorer||2000 pounds|
|Ford Ranger||7500 pounds|
|Ford F150||12,000 pounds|
|Chevy Colorado||7000 pounds|
|Nissan Pathfinder||6000 pounds|
|Nissan Murano||1500 pounds|
|Nissan Titan||9000 pounds|
|Dodge Durango||8700 pounds|
|Dodge Ram||10,600 pounds|
|GMC Sierra||12,000 pounds|
|Toyota Tacoma||6800 pounds|
|Toyota Tundra||10,000 pounds|
|Jeep Wrangler||3500 pounds|
|Jeep Grand Cherokee||6200 pounds|
Sure, there are other SUVs and pickup trucks out there which can haul big loads, but keep in mind that you do need something which can handle the weight of the boat, trailer, gas, accessories, and more.
Keep The Trailer, Gas, & Accessories In Mind
Now, when comparing the weight of the bass fishing boat to the hauling capacity of the vehicle in question, something which a lot of people seem to forget is that the trailer, the gas, and fishing accessories are all going to add weight to the equation.
If you buy a fishing boat that weighs in just under the towing limit of your vehicle, and you have forgotten about the other stuff, you could be in some serious trouble.
So, what do you need to keep in mind here?
- Perhaps the most important thing to keep in mind here is the weight of the trailer. Yes, you need a trailer to tow a boat, and there is no getting around this. A decent boat trailer can start at around 1,500 pounds, but can easily go up to 4,000 pounds or more. Let’s say that an average bass boat trailer is going to come in at around 2,500 pounds.
- You also need to factor in the weight of the fuel you will be using for your boat. Gas is going to weigh around 6.1 pounds per gallon, and for diesel you can add another full pound per gallon. So, you can do the math here. How much gas does your bass boat hold? Say if you have a large fishing boat, one that can hold 50 gallons of gas, you are looking at roughly 300 pounds just for the fuel.
- The other thing to keep in mind here is that you will be hauling fishing gear too, anywhere between 100 and 300 pounds of it, so that is something else to factor into this weight equation as well.
As you can see, you do need to pay close attention to the total weight of the boat, trailer, and more. Worst case scenario, if you have a 2,200 pound boat, a 4,000 pound trailer, 300 pounds of fuel, and another 300 pounds of fishing gear, you are looking at around 7,000 pounds of weight that your truck or SUV needs to be able to tow.
Make sure your vehicle can handle the total weight of all components, or else you are going to have some big problems, especially when it comes to towing uphill!
