Speckled trout and redfish can both be some pretty tough customers, and they can be a bit picky so using the right kind of lure can make all the difference.

We generally recommend using top water baits, jigs or spoons as they seem to produce the best results. Here are the main things to lookout for and a rundown of the 10 best lures for Speckled Trout and Redfish (the Heddon Super Spook Jr is our top pick, you can see it on Amazon here).

What Lures Work Best For Speckled Trout & Redfish?

Before you go out and buy some new lures, it would probably be helpful for you to know what kind of lures actually work best for these fish (more info here on trout specifically).

When it comes down to it, there are 3 types of lures that work best;

1. Top Water Baits.

Speckled trout do enjoy striking at the surface. This includes rat baits, injured bait fish lures, and frog baits too.

2. Jigs

We would recommend a vertical jig, something with a high contrast eye, and maybe even a skirt too.

3. Spoons

Spoons are great for trolling, they create a lot of water movement, they reflect a lot of light, and some of them make quite a bit of noise too.

Other Things To Look Out For;

On a side note, there are some things that you should look out for, not matter what kind of lure you decide to get;

One thing here is durability. Trout can be really rough, so you need to find an option that is highly durable.

While single hooks do work alright, you are better off with a treble hook design, or even better, multiple treble hooks.

Finally, a lure that has a lot of contrast, reflect lights, creates noise, and creates a lot of movement will work best. Essentially, the more fish attracting features the lure in question has, the better off you will be.

Top 10 Lures Speckled Trout & Redfish: Our Picks

We’ve included a bunch of top water lures, and a couple of others too that we think are decent options worth trying.

1. Heddon Super Spook Jr. Lure

This one is meant to mimic a wounded baitfish, which is easily done by using a walk the dog fishing technique. What is nice here is that there are around 30 different color options, each of which are different.

All of these lures are made to be holographic, so they do reflect light very well, thus attracting fish. Some of them are even designed to glow in the dark, which is another good feature no doubt.

These are top water lures, so they are designed to float. Now, they will sink a little bit if you are not reeling them in, but a quick pause in reeling will serve to make it look like the lure is an injured fish.

The lures themselves are made to be very durable and are not about to come apart from some trout strikes. What is also nice about these lures is that the all come with dual treble hooks for maximum hook setting capabilities.

  • Various color options including holo and glow in the dark.
  • Very bright and eye catching.
  • Durable.
  • Great for top water fishing.
  • Dual treble hooks.

  • Colors fade with prolonged use.
  • Do sink a little bit.

2. TECKEL Sprinker Topwater Frog

Here we have another top water frog bait, one that will do great for trout, bass, and other fish that like to strike at the top of the water column. These fish won’t be able to resist a tasty frog.

These things come in a few different color options, some of which are dull, some of which are sparkly, and some which will even glow in the dark. There is one for every fishing situation out there.

These are weedless top water lures, which means that they are designed so they won’t get snagged on weeds, even in water with dense vegetation. The Sprinker Topwater Frog is made with a special tail prop which creates a lot of water movement and vibrations, thus attracting fish from afar.

Moreover, this thing is meant for far distance casting, and it makes an attracting flopping noise when it hits the water, thus sounding like a real frog, although this might spook off some fish. It comes with a super sharp hook and does allow for some pretty efficient hook setting.

  • Excellent for all kinds of top water fishing.
  • Will not sink.
  • Does not get caught in weeds.
  • Added tail prop for movement.
  • Comes in many color options.

3. River2Sea Whopper Plopper

Now, this thing was originally designed for bass fishing, but it actually works pretty well for trout fishing too, even speckled trout, and for redfish to some degree as well. The best part about the River2Sea Whopper Plopper is that it can operate at both very slow and fast cranking speeds.

If you reel it in slowly, the tail will move a bit and the glass beads move around in the head, for a bit of noise and vibration. If you reel it in really fast, the tail moves super-fast and throws around water, with the beads in the head making a lot of noise.

Either way, whether fast or slow, it is a lure that creates a lot of noise and vibration to attract fish from afar, although beware that it might scare some of the more skittish fish off. What is also nice about the River2Sea Whopper Plopper is that it is designed for long distance casting.

This is a top water lure, so it is designed with maximum buoyancy in mind, although it may sink a bit if left unattended. They do come in a ton of different color options, which is nice in terms of variety, some are even made to glow in the dark. They all come with dual treble hooks for maximum hook setting capabilities.

  • Lots of noise and vibration.
  • Bright color options.
  • Great for all kinds of top water fishing.
  • Dual treble hooks for easy hook setting.
  • Good for long distance casting.

  • May get snagged in weeds.
  • May scare of more skittish fish.

4. Savage Gear 3D Rat Bait

You may not have known this, but some trout will eat rats, and in fact, many are known to do so, which means that this particular Savage Gear 3D Rat Bait can come in quite handy. This rat bait comes in various sizes ranging from 6 to 11 inches, making it quite versatile.

Now, this bait is only brown and has minimal color differentiations, so it is not exactly best in terms of color. With that being said, there are a couple of glow in the dark options available.

However, it does come with multiple joints and a long swinging tail to ensure that it creates a whole lot of movement and so that it looks like a real rat. It does create a bit of noise as well. Now, this is a top water bait, so it will float, more or less, making it ideal for top water trout fishing.

The Savage Gear 3D Rat Bait comes with 3 hook loops, so you can attach 3 treble hooks for awesome hook setting capabilities. It comes with a top rigging loop so you can fish it in heavy cover, although it may get snagged on weeds sometimes. It is made with durable ABS plastic, although beware that the feet and tail are not super long lasting here.

  • Quite a durable body.
  • Allows for 3 treble hooks.
  • Top rigging for heavy cover fishing.

5. Z-MAN Trout Eye Jigs Tackle

Now, this is not a top water lure, it is a sinking lure and is designed for vertical jigging, something else which tends to work quite well to attract trout.

These things feature really sparkly and brightly colored hook bodies to create some shimmer. They also feature a super vivid, bright, high contrast, and realistic looking eyeball, which is bound to attract fish from far and wide.

We do like this lure because it is very durable and made of super strong metal, which can also be said of the hook. The hook here is super sharp and should allow for fast and efficient hook setting, plus it is not going to bend or snap anytime soon.

The Z-MAN Trout Eye Jig comes with special barbs to hold additional soft plastic or live baits on it, which should help to increase its efficiency. Here you get 3 of these jigs in a pack. Another thing to note is that these things can also be used for saltwater fishing.

  • Bright colors and eye patterns to reflect light.
  • Super sharp hook.
  • Extremely durable.
  • Great for vertical jigging.
  • Barbs for live bait or plastics.

6. Goture Soft Lures Shrimp Bait Set Kit

Trout, salmon, bass, and all kinds of other fish species love to eat shrimp, whether freshwater or saltwater, so we figured that we would include this super lifelike shrimp bait here. For one, this bait is very easy to rig, which is always a bonus.

Next, these things come in various colors for maximum efficiency. However, they are made to look very realistic, and they do look very real in terms of their shape and movement. However, beware that they are not bright or shiny, so they won’t really reflect too much light.

With that being said, these are fairly slow sinking, so they work well for slow and medium retrieval speeds, and for top water and center column fishing applications. These are soft baits, but they are made to be quite durable, at least the hooks and bodies.

The antenna and legs on these shrimp baits are however not the most durable. You do get a total of 12 lures here, which is nice. One thing that needs to be said here is that the Goture Soft Lures Shrimp Baits could have a bit of a better hook, but other than that, these things do work quite well.

  • Fairly durable.
  • Easy to use.
  • Look very realistic – movement.
  • Good for top water fishing.
  • 12 lures included with various colors.

7. Lindy Little Nipper Jig

This is a good option to go with for trout, walleye, and some other species too. This lure comes in a few different size options, which is always nice. This is a jug meant for horizontal jigging, which can work pretty well for speckled trout, depending on the time of year.

Here you get a nice eyeball jig, with an eye that features a whole lot of contrast so it stands out in the water. These lures come in 9 different bright color combinations, although there is no sparkle or glow in the dark involved here.

Something that is nice about the Lindy Little Nipper Jig is that it comes with a feather skirt. This skirt helps to create a whole lot of movement in the water, thus attracting fish.

However, what should be said here is that skirt is not very durable and is susceptible to ripping off. Yet, the rest of the jig is very durable, which can be said for the hook as well, a hook that is super sharp and should allow for quick hook setting.

  • Great for horizontal jigging.
  • Very sharp hook.
  • Multiple color combinations with high contrast eyes.
  • Skirt for extra movement.
  • Comes in multiple sizes.

  • Not sparkle or glow in the dark options.
