That said, kayaks do of course have their limits, quite literally in fact, because many kayaks out there just aren’t built to handle all that much height.

If you’re looking for a big two person kayak that can handle a whole lot of human, and you want something that is easy to work with, then the Intex Excursion Pro Kayak is definitely something to look into.

Ok, right off the bat, seeing as this is a two person kayak that can hold 400 pounds, it serves to reason that individuals cannot weigh more than 200 pounds, and that is not including fishing gear.

So, while it is designed to hold a lot, it does still have its limits. That said, it is worth noting that this kayak is super tough, as it is made out of laminated PVC combined with a polyester core, thus making it highly resistant to abrasion, impact, scratching, UV light, and more. Even straight gasoline won’t damage this tank.

When it comes to comfort, you get two adjustable bucket seats with tons of padding and good back support, as well as dual floor mounted footrests so you can stay comfortable from morning until night.

What you may also appreciate is that the Intex Excursion Pro Kayak comes complete with two recessed fishing rod holders, as well as a removable and adjustable mounting bracket for fish finders, GPS units, and more.

The Intex Excursion Pro Kayak comes with two skews, one for shallow water and one for deep water.

What you may also like is how the bow and the stern of the Intex Excursion Pro Kayak come with more than enough storage space for a full day’s worth of fishing gear.

Let’s keep in mind that this is of course an inflatable unit, something that makes it super portable and easy to store, although inflating it can be a bit of a pain, not to mention that not matter how tough the materials, inflatables can still pop.

  • Very durable for an inflatable
  • Adjustable bucket seats
  • Designed for two
  • Lots of storage space
  • Portable and easy to store
  • Quite stable
  • Integrated rod holders and gear mounts

  • Technically designed for two people of 200 lbs each (for 400 lbs total, but 200 lbs is not really all that big)
  • Inflatables, no matter how tough can still pop

If what you want is a real fishing kayak that doesn’t even require your hands to propel you forward, one that can hold a massive amount of weight, then the BKC PK13 13′ Pedal Drive Fishing Kayak could be right for you.

Alright, so as stated above, the BKC PK13 13′ Pedal Drive Fishing Kayak can hold a whopping 550 lbs, which is of course a heck of a lot.

Even if you weigh a full 350 pounds, the kayak could still hold another 200 lbs of fishing gear.

People, in terms of weight capacity for kayaks, this is about as good as it gets. We do also have to say that this kayak comes with a really nice seat, complete with great lumbar support.

Now, what really stands out about this unit is that it has a pedal drive system so you can use your feet to move forward, and it comes with a hand operated rudder (that only requires one hand).

This means that you can pedal with your feet and use your hands to fish, which is pretty cool no doubt.

What we also like about the BKC PK13 13′ Pedal Drive Fishing Kayak is that it is made with a hard and high density polyethylene shell.

Yes, it’s plastic, very tough plastic. Although it cannot be deflated and shoved in a closet, it does come with the advantage of being far more durable than an inflatable kayak.

This kayak comes complete with triple flush-mount rod holders, a front storage space with a cover, and a rear storage space too.

The front storage area has a drain hole to allow melted ice water to escape (thus effectively doubling as a livewell for small fish).

  • Amazing weight capacity
  • Spacious and comfy
  • Tons of storage space
  • Foot powered propulsion
  • Three rod mounts
  • High level of durability

  • Pretty heavy
  • Not overly portable
  • Some people don’t like pedal powered kayaks

3. Perception Pescador Sit on Top Fishing Kayak

(Weight Capacity: 375 lb)

Here we have a really nice sit on top kayak for you to check out, a very speed yet spacious kayak that comes complete with some fishing oriented features, and yes, it’s for big boys

If you need a kayak that is fairly stable, as well as easy to mount and dismount, then this one is definitely one to consider.

Due to it being a sit on top kayak, some people have a much easier time getting in and out of it, and moreover, some people also find this type of kayak more comfortable due to there being an increase amount of space.

A lack of leg room is definitely not an issue here. Now, we did say that the Perception Pescador Sit on Top Fishing Kayak is very stable, which is true as far as sit on top kayaks are concerned.

However, in the grand scheme of things, sit on top kayaks can be a bit less stable than normal kayaks because there is much less material below the water line anchoring things down.

In other words, sit on top kayaks are generally not ideal for choppy waters where there is a big risk of tipping.

However, what is nice about this kayak is that it does of course have plenty of space, it comes with adjustable foot rests, as well as an adjustable seat complete with a soft backrest. In other words, even big boys should be comfy on this thing.

The fact that it’s made out of a single piece of lightweight plastic not only makes it very lightweight, but also quite durable.

It features so-called leakproof construction, so even if you damage it, you won’t sink, and let’s face it, this thing is so tough that damaging it is a difficult task on its own.

The Perception Pescador Sit on Top Fishing Kayak comes complete with a very large rear storage area, as well as a large hatch in the front (screw on cover).

  • Ideal for a large single person
  • Good weight capacity
  • Spacious
  • Lots of comfort features
  • Quite durable
  • Stable for a sit on top kayak
  • Leakproof design
  • Lightweight
  • Made in the USA

  • Not as stable as normal kayaks
  • Several have arrived used/damaged

If you are looking for a kayak that is big enough for a big guy, but small enough to remain portable, then the BKC FK184 Sit On Top Fishing Kayak.

Ok, so we did say that this is a relatively small and portable kayak, which is true because it comes in at just 9 feet long, which for a kayak is quite short.

That said, it is made out of solid polyethylene plastic, so you know that it’s tough, and it is designed in such a way to maximize buoyancy, so it won’t have any problems holding up 300+ pounds.

Although it’s not the largest kayak out there, it does have plenty of leg room for big guys, which is of course a big bonus, and moreover, there are also multiple footrest positions for comfort, as well as an adjustable and well padded seat with tons of lumbar support.

All in all, we’d say that in terms of sit on top kayaks, this is probably one of the more comfortable ones out there.

Let’s also keep in mind that the BKC FK184 Sit On Top Fishing Kayak weighs just over 40 pounds, which for a kayak of this nature is quite lightweight.

Next, although sit on top kayaks may not be quite as stable as their regular cousins, due to the keel shape of this one, it is actually fairly stable, a big deal for fishing no doubt.

Speaking of fishing, although this unit doesn’t have quite as much storage as the other kayaks we have looked at so far, it does have a large bungee tie down storage area in the rear, a covered storage area in the front, and a whopping 5 rod holders too.

When it comes to compact fishing kayaks for big guys, this might just be one of the best out there.

  • Very durable
  • Stable for a sit on top
  • Roomy enough for big guys
  • Compact enough for easy transportation and maneuverability
  • Tons of storage space and rod holders
  • Many comfort features

  • Might be too short for some
  • Smaller than the others we’ve looked at

5. Pelican Sit-on-top Fishing Kayak

(Weight Capacity: 325 lb)

Last update on 2024-04-18 / Affiliate links / Images from Amazon Product Advertising API

What we have here is a fairly compact yet spacious fishing kayak that can handle some pretty big human beings no doubt.

This kayak comes in at 10 feet long and is fairly lightweight, thus making it ideal for portability’s sake.

It’s not quite as portable as an inflatable kayak, but the lightweight nature of it does meant that it’s easy to carry, and the two retractable carrying handles don’t hurt either.

The Pelican Sit-on-top Fishing Kayak is of course a sit on top model, but it is made quite wide and features a special keel shape that allows for a great deal of stability.

In terms of durability, this kayak is made out of high quality plastic, which means that it is quite tough, definitely tougher than an inflatable.

In terms of its capacity, it can hold well over 300 pounds, and it is long enough to provide big guys with a good bit of leg room too.

Speaking of legs, the adjustable footrests help keep you comfy, as does the adjustable and well padded seat.

The Pelican Sit-on-top Fishing Kayak comes complete with a swivel rod holder and two flush mount rod holders, as well as a paddle tie down, six accessory eyelets, a quick lock hatch in the front, and a bungee tie down storage area in the rear.

  • Great for large people
  • Plenty of leg room
  • Adjustable footrests
  • Adjustable padded seat
  • Good back support
  • Plenty of storage space
  • Durable
  • Quite stable

  • Seat strap is a bit weak
  • Tracking is not great

Important Kayak Features For Big Men Or Women To Consider

Before you go out and buy a kayak, especially as a larger person, there are some important things that you need to think about, so let’s take a quick look.

Inflatable vs Plastic

One of the main things to consider here is whether you want an inflatable or a solid kayak.

Now, solid plastic kayaks are of course more durable, but that said, they’re are heavier, and not being able to deflate them definitely doesn’t help in terms of portability.

However, inflatable kayaks are soft, and if you are heavy, you’ll sink right into it, and that won’t be comfortable.

In terms of comfort for a large person, a solid kayak is probably best.

Normal vs Sit on Top

Ok, so for fishing, the sit on top kayak is usually the better option because they generally have more storage space and allow for more room to maneuver.

With that being said, sometimes sit on top kayaks are not the most stable of kayaks, which can be a problem if you are a big person.

If you do go for a sit on top model, make sure that it’s wide enough to allow for good stability.

Width & Length

Not to sound crass, but if you are a large person, you have to look for a wide kayak, something that is wide enough to git you.

Moreover, do keep in mind that while compact kayaks are great in terms of carrying and transportation, they don’t always perform well in terms of steering and maneuvering.

When it comes down to it, you’re better off sticking with the larger models.

How to Increase Weight Capacity of Kayak

Some people have asked us how they can increase the weight capacity of a kayak. Now, if you look this up online, you’ll find plenty of wise guy answers, people telling you to just buy a better kayak or paddle in waters that are calm.

Well, the reason for this is because a kayak has a set weight limit and that’s it. Unless you somehow make the kayak bigger, wider, better, and build one with more buoyant materials, that’s it.

Sure, you can start strapping empty plastic bottles with air in them, foam bits, and pool noodles to the side of your kayak to make it more buoyant, but let’s face it, nobody wants to do that.

There is no real way to safely and effectively increase the buoyancy or to increase the weight limit of a kayak that has already been built.

Simply put, if you’re too heavy for your kayak, go get a bigger one.

What Happens if You Exceed the Weight Limit on a Kayak?

If you exceed the weight limit on your kayak by just a few pounds, you’ll probably be fine.

However, if you are well over the weight limit, your kayak is going to sink down deep into the water, perhaps to the point where you will take on water and literally sink.

If something is too heavy to float, it sinks. Even if you don’t sink, you’ll probably tip the thing over as soon as you make one wrong move, and even if that doesn’t happen, steering and maneuvering will be made very difficult.

Can a 300lb person kayak?

Yes! As long as you don’t exceed the weight limit of the kayak in question and you aren’t too out of breath to keep paddling, then there is no reason why a 300lb person could not kayak.

You could be 500 pounds. It really all depends on the kayak in question.

When it comes down to it, we think that the number one best kayak for big guys on the list today is the BKC PK13 13′ Pedal Drive Fishing Kayak.

It’s big, it’s durable, comfortable, can hold a lot of weight, and has many features designed specifically for fishing.

That said, all of the kayaks we looked at today are fine for big people in their own ways.
