A lot of it comes down to preference but these picks should give you some good suggestions to narrow down your list.

Top 5: 4000 Saltwater Spinning Reels

There are actually quite a few decent 4000 spinning reels out there but we have narrowed it down to these 5 that we personally feel are some the best.

1. Penn Battle II Spinning Reel

One of our personal favorite saltwater spinning reels out there right now is the Penn Battle II. Do keep in mind that it comes in a variety of sizes ranging from 1000 to 8000.

Drag, Gear Ratio, & Anti-Reverse

First off, this particular saltwater spinning reel features quite a nice drag system, an HT-100 carbon fiber drag system. It can handle some pretty big fish, and it will keep them from pulling out your line, but will also stop your line from snapping. It’s a high quality drag system that is easily adjustable and is designed for some fairly tough customers.

In terms of the gear ratio, it features a 6.2:1 gear ratio, which means that it is fairly quick on the uptake. It can reel in well over 30 inches of line per crank of the handle, so you can haul fish back to the boat really quick. The instant anti-reverse braking system which is included here is quite nifty as well.

Spool & Line Capacity

One nice aspect about the Penn Battle II is that it comes complete with a Superline spool, one which requires absolutely no backing. It’s a nice choice because it has line capacity markings at one third, two thirds, and full.

In terms of capacity, this spinning reel is pretty average, or a bit better than average, at least as far as spinning reels are concerned. When it comes to monofilament line, it can hold up to 270 yards of 8 pound line or 165 yards of 12 pound line.

What’s also nice here is that this reel is braid ready and can hold up to 490 yards of 30 pound braided line, which is quite impressive if we do say so ourselves.

Overall Construction

We do have to say that the Penn Battle II is built very tough. For one, it features a full metal body and metal side plates, as well as a full metal rotor and a heavy duty aluminum bail wire too.

In other words, everything that can be made of high quality metal here, is made of the best around. It comes with 5 stainless steel ball bearings which are sealed, as well as an instant anti-reverse bearing too.

Of course, this reel is perfect for saltwater and can be used in pretty much any conditions, as it is a really tough saltwater spinning reel.

Pros

  • High max drag.
  • Fast retrieval.
  • Saltwater ready.
  • Extremely durable.
  • High line capacity.

Cons

  • Quite heavy and bulky.
  • Needs lots of oiling and cleaning.

2. Shimano Stradic Ci4+ 4000 Spinning Reel

The Shimano Stradic Ci4+ 4000 is another decent option, plus it comes in a couple of size variations besides 4000.

Drag, Gear Ratio, & Anti-Reverse

Ok, so what does need to be said about this thing is that it is not designed for heavy duty fishing. Well, it can handle a lot of punishment, and is quite durable, but it is designed for smaller and medium size fish.

This can be seen by the 24 pound drag system. No, the Stradic Ci4+ Spinning Reel cannot handle more than 24 pounds of opposing force, at least as far as the drag is concerned. It is a very reliable and tough drag system, just not overly powerful.

In terms of the gear ratio, this thing has a 6.2:1 gear ratio, which is not bad. It certainly allows for quick line retrieval as it can reel in just under 40 inches of line per handle revolution. It’s good for fast action fishing indeed.

It does also come with a pretty nice anti-reverse system, but once again, it’s not too powerful. All in all, this is a very smooth saltwater spinning reel that can handle medium size fish and reel them in fairly fast.

Spool & Line Capacity

In terms of the spool, here you get a cold forged aluminum spool, which is about as tough and durable as can be. It can handle a heck of a lot of pressure, plus of course it is saltwater ready as well. It’s designed for some heavy duty use, while also being about 25% lighter than many others.

What can be said here is that the Shimano Stradic Ci4+ Reel can hold a decent amount of line. When it comes to mono line, it can hold up to 240 yards of 8 pound line or 160 yards of 12 pound line.

This spinning reel is braid ready and can hold up to 280 yards of braided line. It’s not too bad at all and will allow for some fairly long distance fishing.

Overall Construction

What does need to be said about this Shimano Ci4+  is that it is built to be very lightweight, yet also very tough. Now, it does come in at around 8 ounces, but that really is not too heavy considering how durable this thing really is.

Just some of main components here include the Hagane gear, a G Free Body, CI4+, X-SHIP, Core Protect, and the totally new Magnumlite Rotor.

Yeah, this stuff all sounds pretty fancy, and because it is. As far as we are concerned, it’s one of the toughest customers out there right now.

Pros

  • Superior durability.
  • Fairly lightweight.
  • Super fast retrieval.
  • High line capacity.
  • Reliable drag.

Cons

  • Not meant for overly large fish.
  • A bit noisy – needs a lot of oiling.

3. KastKing Sharky III Fishing Reel

The KastKing Sharky III seems to a solid option with quite a lot of nice features, let’s see what this reel has to offer;

Drag, Gear Ratio, & Anti-Reverse

What definitely stands out about the KastKing Sharky III is that it has a great drag system with lots of power.

This thing can handle close to 40 pounds of drag, which means that it can keep some really big fish from pulling your line out.

It’s an adjustable drag system, one that is durable and reliable. This thing is all about brute force.

In terms of the gear ratio, here you get a fairly high gear ratio, around 6:1, and it can reel in just over 31 inches of line per turn of the handle.

Once again, this is ideal for some fairly fast action fishing. The reliable anti-reverse system is another defining feature here, one which helps to keep your fingers safe from harm.

Spool & Line Capacity

As is the case here, the Sharky III Reel’s spool is also designed to handle large prey and lots of pressure. The aluminum spool is quite tough and absolutely ready for saltwater fishing too.

This thing is braid ready, which is another bonus. When it comes to line capacity, this spinning reel can hold close to 220 yards of 10 pound line or 164 yards of 14 pound line, which is quite impressive no doubt. It can hold way more braided line too.

Overall Construction

The going trend here is that the KastKing Sharky III Fishing Reel is designed for muscling in big fish, something which it does exceedingly well.

It comes with 10+1 shielded stainless steel bearings, which are totally ready for saltwater use and they keep things about as smooth as humanly possible. Literally everything about this reel is designed for big fish and heavy duty use.

Pros

  • Very strong and durable.
  • Designed for big fish.
  • Fast retrieval.
  • High maximum drag.
  • High line capacity.

Cons

  • A bit big and bulky.

4. Cadence Fishing CS8 Spinning Reel

This is another heavy duty saltwater spinning reel to keep in mind that also comes in also comes in 1000, 2000, 3000 and 4000 sizes.

Drag, Gear Ratio, & Anti-Reverse

For one, the Cadence CS8 comes with a really durable carbon fiber drag system. It comes with an easy to adjust knob, so you can easily set the drag.

The drag system here is made to be very tough and durable, not to mention saltwater resistant too. It has a maximum drag of 20 pounds, which is not too bad. It has the ability to keep some pretty big fish on the line without having your line snap.

When it comes to the gear ratio, this reel features a 6.2:1 gear ratio. This means that it can reel in around 38 inches of line per crank of the handle. It’s a good choice for medium size fish that need to be hauled in really fast, as high speed retrieval is something which this thing does quite well.

This reel does also come with an instant anti-reverse bearing to stop the handle from spinning the wrong way at breakneck speeds.

Spool & Line Capacity

Another reason why we do like the Cadence CS8 is because it does have quite a nice spool. The spool here is made of machined aluminum, so you know that it is fairly tough, plus it doesn’t need any backing and is braid ready too.

This thing can fit quite a bit of line, which is nice for long distance fishing. In terms of mono line, it can hold up to 270 yards of 8 pound line or 160 yards of 12 pound line.

Like we said, it is braid ready, and can hold up to 310 yards of 15 pound braided line, which is not too bad. You can definitely get some distance out of this thing no doubt.

Overall Construction

In terms of overall construction, the Cadence CS8 Spinning Reel is definitely a tough customer. The whole frame and everything surrounding it is made of high quality magnesium, which is about as tough as it gets.

Not only do the 9 ball bearings keep things super smooth here, both for casting and retrieval, but they are also totally sealed and ready for saltwater action.

The durable EVA handle is also quite tough, not to mention comfy and ergonomically friendly. When it comes down to it, everything about this saltwater spinning reel is designed to be tough.

Pros

  • High max drag.
  • Very fast retrieval.
  • Pretty good line capacity.
  • Saltwater ready.
  • Very strong frame.
  • Nice handle.

Cons

  • Needs to be rinsed in freshwater after use.
  • Not the best for very large fish.

5. Bassdash Alien Carbon Spinning Reel

The Bassdash Alien Carbon Spinning Reel comes in various sizes including 4000, 3000, 2000, and 1000. It’s got quite a few nice features worth mentioning.

Drag, Gear Ratio, & Anti-Reverse

The Bassdash Alien Reel is designed for smaller and medium size saltwater fishing applications. For one, it has a nice triple disc drag system that is very smooth and reliable, not to mention quite durable, and fully adjustable too.

The max drag on this thing tops out at 15 pounds, which once again, is good for medium and smaller fish. It will keep them on the line, without having the line fly off the spool, but probably won’t do for very large fish.

This reel comes with a 6:1 gear ratio, which is pretty good. It allows for some fairly fast retrievals and can haul in 32 inches of line per turn of the handle. This is a very smooth fishing reel, so long distance casting and very smooth and fast retrievals are more than possible.

What is nice about this 4000 size spinning reel is that it comes with an infinite anti-reverse system to stop the handle from spinning in the wrong direction.

Spool & Line Capacity

The Bassdash Alien Carbon Spinning Reel does have a really nice braid ready machined aluminum spool. It’s quite tough, can handle a fair amount of weight, and yes, has no problems with saltwater either.

Now, what does need to said here is that this reel is not exactly the best for long distance fishing, as the line capacity is a bit limited. When it comes to monofilament line, it can hold up to 190 yards of 8 pound line or 125 yards of 12 pound line.

In terms of braided line, it can hold up to 190 yards of 40 pound line or 110 yards of 60 pound line. It’s good enough for most needs, but as you can see, it can’t hold all that much line.

Overall Construction

The Bassdash Alien Carbon Spinning Reel is a pretty tough spinning reel. Everything that can be made of metal here is, which includes the frame, plus a lot more. The carbon fiber frame cover and rotor is super tough, but also lightweight, and yes, saltwater resistant too.

The spool is made of machined aluminum, and the triple disc carbon drag system is tough as nails too. The 9 stainless steel bearings included here not only help to keep things running smoothly, but they are also sealed and saltwater ready.

Pros

  • Saltwater ready.
  • Good for small and medium size fish.
  • High level of durability.
  • Fast retrieval.
  • Reliable drag system.

Cons

  • Not going to be able to handle large fish.
  • Anti-reverse has a tendency to wear down fast.

What Makes A Good 4000 Size Saltwater Spinning Reel?

We are going to keep it fairly short here, but when you are looking to buy a Size 4000 Saltwater Spinning Reel, you do want to pay attention to a few key factors.

1. Drag

You want the reel in question to have a high maximum drag. The bigger the fish you are going for, the more drag it needs to have.

2. Gear Ratio

When it comes to fast retrievals, a high gear ratio is important. The faster you want to retrieve the fish, and the smaller it is, the higher the ratio should be.

3. Anti-Reverse

Every good fishing reel needs to have an anti-reverse system to keep your fingers safe.

4. The Spool

A spool that is braid ready is always a bonus, not to mention that the longer distance fishing you want to do, the more capacity the spool needs to have. (we have covered our favorite braided lines here)

5. Saltwater Durability

Finally, you need the spinning reel to have sealed bearings, to be lightweight yet durable, and to be able to deal with saltwater.

Conclusion

We hope we have given you a few suggestions, it does really come down to preference but these 5 picks are some of our personal favorite 4000 spinning reels.
